This seemed like a likely place to find the wolf mutant, he had been off duty for the rest of the day from classes and boy had he deserved it. He had been busy trying to train the students and more than once they had gotten on his nerves and he did his best to try to not make it show. Of course that was easier said than done, his rage had always been an issue in the past and it seemed that it still managed to leak through every once in a while. He knew he’d be a danger if his rage continued to come in like this. He’d harm his students or even his other staff members by accident-though there was more than one time where he actually wanted to use it to his advantage with the likes of Scott Summers. The two had always been rivals and it been awhile since the days that the X-Men had formed. Luckily things were not near as heated since those days, he got the fact that Scott had liked Jean and wanted her to be his only girl. Things had changed so much since those days it was hard to believe that he still tolerated Scott to some degree. But one wrong move would probably set the two off again as he made a brawl with the leader of the school. “Kids these days, they take so much out of you.” Logan said as he cracked his bones as he twisted his joints a bit as he heard them cracking against his cartilages. Some people would have found that a bit well disgusting but he didn’t mind it at all. He was not bothered by such things that were probably a lot worse than cartilage rubbing up against each other. He had escaped death so many times that some had considered him immortal-well there was a big news flash to them he wasn’t. It was only thanks to his healing factor that he had lived so long. A bullet would have killed him and he’d only be a distant memory as of now.
He was out looking at the sunset as he had some time to himself, but there was something that his ears caught. The sensitive ears were so sharp he could hear things most normal humans wouldn’t have. They were footsteps, usually by now the kids were inside studying or out for a bit before their curfew came in and it was time for bed to start the day again. These footsteps did not sound like kids they were ones that he had heard many times before, and he had to figure it out soon. The last thing he wanted was someone to surprise him-which was rare or impossible for the mutant to be jumped on. “I’d suggest you don’t try to jump me. I heard you as soon as you came into the room.” He said as he referred to the room that was leading to the outdoor porch. His guess came in much clearer now, it was soft and light to the touch, possibly a woman who had been in the school. His thoughts went towards the women that were in the school, it wasn’t Shadowcat, nor was it someone along the likes of Storm with her feet. They were easily ruled out.
Finally he gave in to look to see who was there as his blue eyes glanced to where he heard them. It was clear that there was a bit of a tired look in his eyes from the times of the constant training that the students he taught it to. There was also a lust for something, maybe another one of the old sake adventures? It seemed like he was mostly in the training program and they went on very few missions now that the world was a lot safer. Most villains been behind bars or refused to co-operate with the peaceful times. Heck he hadn’t even seen Sabertooth in some time, and that was even a rare one to see. He was sure Sabertooth would pop up sooner or later. Then he’d get a fight.

Being a teacher, a special education teacher above everything else, took a great deal of patience and a high toll on anyone, even if the students weren't the only special ones. It was true that Logan wasn't known for his patience, but even calm little Miss Perfect was mentally exhausted by the end of the day. Especially days like that, where her two subjects occupied most of her day with only a small lunch break at some point in between. There was always someone trying to pull a prank using his gifts or talking during class or just being snappy as only a teenager could and all those years at the Academy still hadn't gotten her used to scolding people. Her gentle nature begged for her to find a peaceful solution when her logical counterpart knew she had to stand her ground and make students responsible for their actions. That part was emotionally draining.
With most students inside, that was the time of the day when Jean sought a little peace and quiet. Even with her ability and practice at blocking out everyone's thoughts to prevent a head wrecking migraine, it still meant a constant little effort on her part, like keeping a certain muscle tight in the same uncomfortable and unnatural position for hours at a time, day after day. You might get used to it, but it didn't mean it didn't feel cramped after a while. In a sense, she went outside for the same reason Logan had. Her mind needed to be able to do the equivalent of stretching to relieve the tension accumulated during the day.
As she walked a few feet away from the entrance door, Jean let her mind slowly unfold, a tiny little bit at a time in the direction of the gardens. That had to be less crowded than the mansion by far. There was someone out there, but it was just one person. Blocking it out wouldn't mean such a strain compared to teaching to hormonal teenagers, plus there was another reason for leaving that mind alone, besides her usual discretion and respect for other people's privacy: she recognized that thinking wavelength and the one place she didn't want to get was inside Logan's mind.
So, he was out there too, Jean thought, wondering if his day had been any better than hers. She couldn't see him from where she was and wasn't sure he'd want company either. Very much like the wild animal he sometimes resembled, she had learned to approach him as silently as she could and then stop at a certain distance. Then, she'd wait and let him take the initiative if he felt like talking to people. If he didn't, she'd just go about her business and leave him alone with his thoughts. The exceptions to that rule often involved her sensing him in distress or troubled by something. In those cases, her natural kindness drew her in with the best disposition to help if she could, even if it only meant listening to rants and saying a word or two, or even nothing at all.
Her thoughts diluted when she went past a few bushes and got a look at the sunset that was on the background. It was breathtaking and she stopped there for a long moment, just enjoying the natural beauty of the scenery. Seeing another day end without the fear of losing control of the Phoenix and hurting those she cared about when a new day begun, was a blessing. Ever since she had come back, without the Phoenix taking over her for a change that's exactly how she felt: blessed, lucky, and extremely happy just to be alive and home.
That reminded her of Logan. She could make out the shape of his body against the rays of the sun now and walked some more in his general direction, not taking her eyes off the sunset until she was a lot closer. Then she lowered the hand that had been shielding her eyes up to that point and looked at him across a small hedge. A small smile of friendly recognition played on her lips for a moment and she decided it was one of those days where she'd just walk to him without ceremonies. There was something about his look that made her think there was definitely something on his mind, the kind of thing that, if left alone to take more concise shape, could end up leading anywhere... and anywhere usually meant trouble for everyone.
Jean walked slowly along the hedge until it ended for a while as a makeshift door she went through. "Hey there," she said casually, a small smile still on. She was standing a couple of meters from him, ready to leave if he didn't feel like company.

Logan had frustrating days in the past and they had come back several times. And there normally was a good reason for it, most of the punishments varied such as large amounts of homework for not listening or doing what he had said or he’d hold the class longer and until the last minute so they could get out and leave. He had even made some of the students help clean off the Blackbird when they had gone out to cause trouble. Logan was well-known to give a bit of a harsh punishment from time to time. Though he hadn’t given anyone today but still the day could have gone better if one of the young mutants hadn’t caught the training exercise area on fire. Sure it was by accident, but what if someone got hurt in the process? Luckily with their quick thinking and Logan’s attempt to get them out of the path of the fire it had been put out and only scorch marks had been left there.
With that the mutant had dismissed that it had been an accident, but next time that mutant caused the fire again he was going to have to talk to the other students about his issue. And he’d get to the thought that it wasn’t just an accident but trying to sabotage or even create a prank that went horribly wrong. He wouldn’t tolerate such things like that. It seemed like Jean’s day didn’t go as well either as he looked back at her when she came out into the area where he was. He didn’t seem to mind her company at all, so he made no attempt to tell her to leave. If he wanted to be left alone he’d let them know with a series of words and as well as a few sharp threatening growls depending on who they were.
“Hello Jean.” Logan said as he had greeted Jean back with a soft nod. His thoughts seemed to be everywhere as he tried to figure out what to say. There was some awkward silence, which he sensed between the two. Well it shouldn’t have been that surprising, they had a long history with each other and it had been a rough one. Finally he decided to tell her what was going on in his mind as he gave a soft sigh. There was something going on with the Avengers and he hadn’t exactly been doing his part with them for some time. Being a part-time Avenger he owed that team some of his time as well.
Just here it had been busy as well. “Jean I’ve been thinking of taking a few weeks off again to go see the Avengers. They haven’t exactly been doing so well, which is a surprise. Tony and Steve normally have things covered as team leaders, but their building was almost destroyed nearly a week ago.” Logan said wondering if he should tell her the news. It’d trouble Jean and he didn’t want her to go through such a pain. “They were attacked by the Phoenix Force…I didn’t want to trouble you with that news since I know you and your past with it isn’t exactly the greatest.” Logan finished as he looked away not entirely sure what to expect from Jean. Perhaps there’d be some anger?
But no, that wasn’t Jean at all; she as well as others knew that he tended to take some time off from the X-Men to go see how the Avengers were doing. He had a half time job there and one of the reserved spots as the New Avengers. So going back and forth was difficult for him from the times where the X-Men really needed him or the Avengers needed him. This time he figured that the Avengers needed him more this time, recovering from such an attack would take time. Lots of time.

A small wave of surprise washed over Jean as she heard the rather standoffish response she got from Logan. Her mind immediately replayed all their last conversations looking for something she might have said or done for him to decide to keep his distance from her, verbally at least. She just couldn't find it, so the spark of complicity and warm friendship that had been in her eyes until then died as concern replaced it. It was ironic, but Jean had gotten so used to the 'hey red' that had irritated her senseless in the beginning, she had never thought she'd miss it. Now she felt almost rejected without it.
Jean lowered her eyes with a hint of sadness and pretended to look at the garden before them. Her first impulse had been to ask if something was wrong, but for some reason the red head found herself unable to speak and an uncomfortable silence stretched between the two of them. She always found it sad when that happened. The moments when they were able to connect, to just spend quality time as friends without him trying to push it were rare, but she truly enjoyed them and had hoped they'd have gotten to an understanding by that point. "What's wrong, Logan?" She finally asked, looking back at him, mortified. Not knowing what she had said or done to upset to the point of being cool towards her, filled Jean with guilt, but she didn't invade the private space that was his mind, even if the uneasiness he was projecting was loud.
His first words worried her even more, as she thought whatever had angered —or most likely hurt him— was the cause for his desire to go away. Yet, she listened to the rest of his speech, her perfect features disrupted by a crease in her forehead at the word 'destroyed'.
Jean had some time to wonder what could have be the reason for that as, she too, thought Tony and Steve capable of handling any mess life could swing their way, at least for what she had heard. However, before she could draw any conclusions or ask any questions, Logan talked again, giving her the bad news.
This time, she went pale under the golden-red rays of the setting sun. The news were so shocking, Jean was unable to react and, for the longest moment, just stood there, looking at Logan without really seeing him, completely frozen as a million things, thoughts, fears and memories alike, went through her head at once. Then she opened her mouth, blinked a couple of times, frowned in denial and closed her mouth again. So it hadn't been a nightmare after all, that strange Phoenix power surge she had felt a while ago, was her first coherent thought.
After that came a sad acceptance and a pair of full lips that turned into a line out of mere outrage. It was out there again, tormenting somebody else somewhere and making innocent people pay for it, too. A heavy sigh escaped the deepest part of her soul, leaving the red haired woman hunched rather than standing like an former fashion model. "I understand," she managed to get out, still half lost in her own thoughts of pain, rage and guilt over the part of that sad story that she attributed to her own fault beyond all logic. "Thank you." Those words came out more firmly, but sincere, and her green eyes, that had been looking all over the garden grass for an answer that wasn't there, fixed on Logan's for a moment as her hand came to rest on his forearm. She gave it a squeeze before letting go. She didn't like being treated as something frail that had to be protected and had always appreciated Logan's straightness.
An internal struggle was tearing her apart. What should she do? Offering to help felt like the least she could do but, what it her presence near the Phoenix made it want to posses her again? A part of Jean called her selfish for fearing her free will would be taken away once more, but the part of her that was logical suspected this new host, whoever it might be, had a better control over the Phoenix force. Otherwise, the energy burst she had sensed would have been much, much worse.
"How can I help?" She suddenly asked, her eyes blazing with resolve and determination. The Phoenix was her responsibility after all. It had been her who had accepted to merge with it, even if it was for a good cause. She had always done her best to keep its destruction to a minimum and it would truly be selfish to stop now just because she wasn't its host anymore.

It seemed like Logan was expecting the worst to when it came to the Avengers building. Not only that but it was Tony’s home and where he did most of his work for Stark Industries. If he had it destroyed he could always build it back up, but it’d take time and as well as cost a fortune. Well Tony had the money being that he was one of the richest men alive. He heard Jean’s voice and could certainly tell that she was concerned about what happened, who wouldn’t be? But he also noticed that she was a bit disappointed that he had not called her Red. Well he figured he owed her now for not saying it, but there had been several things on the mutant’s mind right now, he’d give it to her. Maybe it would come in some sort of surprise?
He figured lending a hand or two from the Avengers would keep their neutral alliance alive and help them bring the two teams forward. Maybe one day they’d be able to work together if some sort of crisis. He knew Tony would not deny some sort of help from another team and if he had put the thought and logic behind it in order to help better the world. This might have been one of those moments if the Avenger Leaders agreed to it. Each one of them had been a part of experiencing how awful the Phoenix Force power had been. It could take lives so easily it was unfair. He knew he wasn’t going to be surprised when he heard that there were casualties. There were the Young Avengers, he was sure some of the kids got into trouble or had issues, but he desperately hoped that most of them were unharmed. The sad thing was, that was going to be impossible to agree with.
He felt Jean touch his shoulder but he didn’t tense like he would have with a stranger, Jean was not a stranger at all. He had known her for years now and trusted her heavily-unlike some of the newest members that had arrived. They’d take some time for the wolf mutant to get used to. “It is troublesome for sure. I imagine that the Avengers did not get out with no wounds from that attack-that’d be a miracle. But I think we could use your help Jean. You obviously have experience from the Phoenix Force. But in what, I’m not entirely sure what we could do there. We could help rebuild the tower, help heal the ones that are injured and still need medical attention. I’m sure Tony’s already covered most of the problems since it is his home.” Logan explained as he thought of some ideas that might be useful. He knew on more than one occasion that a blood transfusion to another with his healing factor could cure just about any fatal injury. He knew that’d be a help if they were willing to try and take the offer.
He also didn’t know one other thing that was bothering him, who else had the Pheonix Force? He was sure that Tony and Steve had witnessed the user on who it had been. They could easily find out from asking the other avengers that had been a witness to it. All of them probably had their guesses and as well as the real answer. With the end of his conversation he felt Jean put her hand back down. It was a gentle touch that was for sure, but he still felt it enough. “But that is up to you if you want to go Jean. I won’t press you on making a decision. I’ve already somewhat made mine up.” Logan said knowing that he’d have to hand over his classes over to someone else while he was gone. Some of the other substitutes or the real teachers would be required in order to run the Danger Room. A student couldn’t do it by themself.
Logan could imagine it now, there was so much terror probably that it scared most of the students that had not that much experience with fighting. And those who did were trying to protect the ones that had gotten into the path of the struggle. He could see Tony telling the others what to do, so they could all safe. But that was going to be a tough one. They couldn’t stop it, just like the X-Men had so much trouble with it. And Hope did her best to hold it all in. He barely knew the mutant but had seen her once or twice on the news when the Avengers had been out and doing their own mission. But he had never spoken with her or interacted with her. She was a mystery to her and him. So they hadn’t met yet at all. He didn’t even know if Jean had met her yet either.

Jean felt reassured when Logan didn't draw back his arm, not so much about the nickname thing anymore —there were much more important things to worry about now that peace was over for her—, but because the news had hit her hard, right into a still very sore spot and that brief contact had sufficed to keep her from falling apart. It reminded her of Logan's presence and of how important and real those dreadful news were. She had to be ready to face her worst nightmare again, the redhead told herself, even if she didn't feel up to it yet. The Phoenix had been a huge part of her life for a really long time for someone so caring not to feel somehow responsible for any damage it might continue to cause. Besides, if it had been any other enemy they had fought before attacking their allies of sorts, she'd want to help as well, unless there was someone more suited to help and her best way of doing it were to stay at the academy, but there wasn't anyone more suited to deal with the Phoenix than the two of them. She had been the one enduring it and he, the one who had most often put an end to her life to stop it.
She just shook her head at his suggestion, causing a sea of red curls flying in all directions. "The Avengers are perfectly capable of cleaning after themselves and probably lick their own wounds as well." Proud Mr.Stark probably wouldn't want any help with that anyway. "We need to track down the source of that Phoenix force burst of energy and find a way to..." For the briefest moment, Jean hesitated between several ways of saying what she thought, looking for the one that didn't sound like a bloody job, though she knew it could very well come down to it if the Phoenix was involved. "...at the very least try to minimize its potential for damage," she said averting her gaze back to the grass. In her head, it sounded like she was warning him there might come a time when he might have to kill another Phoenix possessed creature if things really came down to that, but she truly hopped that it didn't and wished for a more peaceful resolution with all her being... still she knew the Phoenix force and its potential for destruction and blood-lust still scared her immensely.
Determination still burned fiercely in those green eyes when Logan offered her to step down. She looked at him straight in the eye, maybe a bit too close for what she'd usually be comfortable with, but it was the Phoenix whey were talking about and she was afraid. After both their history with that entity, his proximity made her feel the safest, no matter how deeply she loved Scott. He just couldn't do the right thing when the moment came... not once, not twice... but this wasn't about either of them, it was about saving lives and she was the one who knew their enemy the most. "No. I have to go, Logan," she said stubbornly, her hand resting on his forearm again. "I've had it inside my head, I know what it feels like, what... used to... work to keep it in check sometimes." The young redhead struggled for words as she tried to express very abstract psychic concepts in mere words, when they were more like shapes and colors in her mind.
"I need to see for myself," she explained with an apologetic look. "I need to talk to the host." Jean said with total conviction. "Do you think we could go where she is?" She pleaded in a smaller voice that made her appear more vulnerable, because now she wasn't trying to appear strong but showing him as she was: scared but determined. "I'm almost sure I'd be able to track it down. It was a pretty strong energy and I can still feel the Phoenix's power signature like a magnet's pull." Her eyes were lost in the sun that had disappeared almost completely and her hand still rested on his forearm as her thoughts anticipated the hardships to come when the time to face her personal demons came.

Even if Jean wasn’t going to go to the Avengers, Logan was still setting his mind on it. He did work part-time for the team anyways and he owed them a lot. Even towards Steve when he had fought side by side with him in the wars that happened so long ago. It was so long ago it was well before he had become Weapon X. So it was safe to say that he and the Avengers went way back, before they had even been originally formed he knew some of them before they became heroes. Or they were just starting out. Becoming a hero at that time was one of a kind job, there weren’t as many heroes or they were still in the process of learning, a hero was rare in some words. Now if you looked left or right you could find one down every street corner the way they kept popping up. Yes, he understood that Tony had pride and as well as an ego that wasn’t easily shattered. But stepping on it might dampen their relationship to a degree; he just had to be careful to when it came to Tony.
“Jean I’m probably still going to go at this point, even if it is for a short time. A day or two just to check up on them and make sure everything is alright. I can’t exactly drop everything here, the students still obviously need me and the X-men do also. I’ve known some of the Avengers for a very long time. So I owe them at least that much of my time.” Logan said as he kept his voice calm. He could tell Jean was still concerned about what was going on and it didn’t surprise him. Who wouldn’t be angry or concerned about something like the Phoenix Force? What if it fell into the wrong hands? What if…he didn’t even want to think about something along those lines. They’d manipulate the Phoenix Force to a great evil and to a point of where it could not be controlled. It’d result in the world’s doomsday event and everyone would be gone.
“I am aware that we might be stepping on Ironman’s pride. He has too much of it, and his ego doesn’t help either. None the less he’ll just have to get used to be staying there for a day or two.” Logan said knowing that it was possible they didn’t want his help at all. But they had been through the same thing and sought out help to when it came to such a disaster. The X-Men had lost their home more than once and they always rebuilt. That made him shudder to think about it, but he tried his best to hardly show any emotion as he thought over things and listened to what Jean had to say. He felt her put her arm on his shoulder again where his muscles were. They felt relaxed in some way, and it was clear that he hadn’t minded Jean at all for putting her arm there. If she wanted some comfort, he’d give it to him in a friendly way.
Though as he listened to Jean as she had interest on going to seek whoever had the Phoenix Force he felt like he should come along as well. Just because Jean had been a friend for so long to him, he knew that Jean might also need some help as well. “Jean I’ll go with you. Xavier would probably want it to be that way that you didn’t go alone.” Wolverine said knowing that their Professor was still alive. He knew most of the staff members were well aware of what was going on. And he knew there was a good chunk of the students that knew of the truth behind Xavier but obviously were going to keep it a secret on his death. Here they were safe about mentioning that topic.
“But I’m sure we can go at this point. We’d use the Blackbird since it is the fastest jet we have.” Logan said with a soft nod. “That’d be something useful to have. I think we would be able to track it with Cerebra, but even that wasn’t going to be easy if the owner wanted to be secluded.” The wolf mutant said as he listened to what Jean to say. It was clear that she wanted to go on this mission and had determination to go. Logan knew his choice of words could not stop her at this point. She’d go no matter what.

Having been Logan's friend for as long as she had, Jean knew part of his situation with the Avengers and, what she didn't know, she suspected for the little cues he gave over the years as he talked, looked at her or averted his gaze, and other small body language details as his jaw tensing or pulse raising. She understood how he'd feel torn between what he felt was right and obliging to her wishes, but Stark's pride had generated in her the need to state that they could manage. "It would be thoughtful of you," she admitted. "But don't say I didn't warn you when they slap the door on your face," Jean joked. Logan had always been honest with her, she was open with him as well in return and that was what she thought of the Avenger situation. After all, all the superhero groups had had their own little domestic catastrophes and had managed mostly on their own, also out of pride. If he went up there and got sent back home with a frown, at lest she had fulfilled her duty to warn him.
Jean always tried to be fair and to give all their friends her best possible advice because she was the caring type. The fact that she had decided to be Logan's friend despite his interest in her and had stuck to that plan almost stubbornly was another proof of that. He was a loner. She could handle him. He tolerated her and it worked. Depriving a man of a possible friend just because he made things more complicated than usual —either by his mood swings or his interest in her or whatever other reason people used as excuse—, would have been unfair and not something she would do. Yes, they had a very long history of him being insistent and her being confused enough to reciprocate him to some degree, but despite it all (and despite all the misleading things Jean might do just for being a touchy feely person), she considered Logan her friend and as such she both told him exactly what she thought and wanted his support in a matter where he had proven to be the most efficient of all X-Men: killing murderous fire birds.
"Good." She nodded, a secret smile forming on her mind at the irony that someone with an ego the size of Logan's was talking about Mr.Stark like that. Had it been a less serious situation, she would barely be able to refrain from laughing and possibly joking about it. "It's OK, Logan. You don't have to come. I can ask Scott or Nat to come with me," she said in a soft, understanding voice and a moment later her eyes scanned the garden again, her mind racing. If things went south, would Scott or especially Nate be able to do the right thing the way Logan had or was it just because it had been her that everyone had found it so difficult to... well, to kill her. Those memories had her suppressing a sigh. A quiet simple life had been so nice!
She looked back up at him when he said he'd go with her. For a moment, she seemed to struggle between complaining and thanking him, then he mentioned Xavier and she got distracted 'looking around' with her telepathy to make sure no one had heard. A quick nod acknowledged his suggestion. "Scott probably won't like this," Jean said with a tired voice. Tired because the arguments about the harmless time she spent with Logan as a friend had her exhausted beyond words. "But, if it comes down to..." she swallowed hard, not wanting to be too graphic to avoid shivering at the memory. "...if things get real bad, I know I can count on you to do what's right," she finished with an eloquent look that said she probably couldn't say that much about anyone else... and she wasn't asking Emma any favors. Anyone but her.
"Thank you, Logan," she said sincerely. There was pain in her voice too, but the Phoenix being back was a lot to take in. "I'll wait until you finish your business with the Avengers. They're bound to be able to shred some light into all this anyway and there isn't too much information when it comes to the Phoenix." Now that the arrangements were being made and the trip felt more real, Jean couldn't help to let some of her previous fears take over her mind again and even leaking out of her barriers. There was just so much to think about, so many possibilities to consider, none of them agreeable on the least. She just hopped a few more days didn't mean more dead.
The redhead nodded again. "I felt it, you know? When it came back," she confessed. "I thought it was a dream... a nightmare, but I think I can track it. We can definitely find it if we take the jet." Jean said with more confidence than she felt.

Logan was pretty familiar with Stark’s pride, more than once he had been kicked out because the Avengers hadn’t needed him at the time. Well if the New Avengers were needed, they shouldn’t complain that much while he disappeared or wasn’t around. He’d at least be there long enough to find out what happened. He knew the media tended to warp things on what happened or put their bias side to the story saying how a villain probably caused it or even the mutants were suddenly turning bad now. Whatever the case, a good chunk of them knew what was going on. “I’ll hang around at least until I get some information out of Steve. He’s usually the one that respects my appearance being there. He’s fought with me more than once and knows the most about how I move and tick.” Logan said but gave it a bit of a shrug. A lot of the X-Men knew how he maneuvered in battle since he had been fighting with them so long. But Cap was different, he was certainly not a powered mutant but he had the skill, the strength, and the will to keep moving. It was true when Logan had joined the X-Men though he hadn’t had many friends, he worked by himself. But there were a few that he came across to be like friends and knew them so well. He had Jean, Storm, and Shadowcat. He had even given Shadowcat one of his bone claws since the time it had broken off from years ago before he became Weapon X he collected them on occasions. So in a way it was like she still had some of him with her. But there was something about Jean that made him click and he wasn’t so sure what it had been. Had it been her stunning red hair? Or had she reminded him of someone in his past that he had forgotten about? He had looked far and wide with Xavier in his mind and no answer was found.
But when she mentioned Scott he couldn’t help let out a snort towards the mention of him. He knew that he still had some issues with Scott and all; he’d rather not be in the same room as the man and avoid him at all costs. He figured that still old vibes were still there for the leader as Xavier was supposed deceased. “Sorry about that Jean-the sound of disgust. We may be able to tolerate each other now, but what happens when the bomb is set off and we manage to start fighting again? You’d probably be the first one to stop us from wrecking the place.” Logan said remembering several confrontations that he had with Scott. In fact even in one of them he had managed to stop fighting with Scott after Jean asked him not to do so. It was only showing how arrogant Cyclops had been at that time. But since they had other duties that were going on things changed, he changed, Scott changed, and even Jean changed. Logan understood that he’d never be able to get Jean at the rate that he was going. “Never mind about what I said about that. It was only a worry of what may become of us again. We haven’t fought in a long time. I wouldn’t care at all if you brought Scott instead of me, you two get along easily in missions like those.” Logan said as he looked back at Jean as she seemed to appreciate his offer on going with her. What were friends for?
“You can count on me.” Logan said with a soft nod back to Jean as he listened to her. “And you’re welcome.” Logan added. The thought of going on an adventure certainly excited him, but he knew his excitement would have to wait. After all it was more for Jean and whoever the current Phoenix Force user was. He probably wasn’t going to be needed much unless Jean insisted on it. He didn’t know for sure if he’d be needed or not. He could at least act like a guard or something along those lines; with his sensitive hearing and sense of smell it’d be useful
. “I wouldn’t be that surprised if you felt it Jean. Our dreams work in a strange way; I’ve had bad dreams that felt unreal like they were from a nightmare myself. But in reality it was a memory that I had forgotten from some time ago. Sometimes I wish I had completely forgotten some things.” Logan added as he gave a low sigh. There was some depression in it, but so far he knew that was something that you could not fix. “But yes we can take that. It’ll get us to the area in a decent amount of tie no matter where the person is. So it’ll be good use to us.”

A nod and a little smile were Jean's first response. "He's probably your best option at this point. Mr.Stark will be less likely to make a scene if you're hanging out with him." Not that 'less likely' made it impossible or less probable by much, but still was better than being greeted by a moody Ironman, too proud to accept help. And if Tony's ego kept him more busy than the rest, Steve would be more likely easier to talk to first.
Jean shook her head. "This goes beyond our personal differences." Though she wasn't sure who in particular she was trying to convince, if him or herself. "But even if it didn't, we've all messed up so many times, arguing would be pointless." Everyone had things to blame on the others and on themselves and it would have been endless. "I understand that you two are too different to be friends, but I'm so done arguing, Logan." Jean suppressed an exhausted sight and flashed a resigned smile that begged 'not now'. On top of the Phoenix, she didn't want to have to think of her personal life. Teaching two subjects had been a great way to avoid thinking about it at all.
She seemed to hesitate. Jean wasn't the kind of person who'd talk badly about others, but she had to be objective on this one, because many lives could depend on their decision. "Whatever my feelings for Scott are, we both know he's not the man for this kind of job." Jean had to admit a bit deflated. Too many times he had been unable to have the guts to kill her and had left the dirty job to Logan. What if things went badly and Scott couldn't make the right choice? Even if he was changed, that didn't guarantee anything and she still wanted to try to talk first, and leave the fighting as a last resource.
She sounded exhausted, defeated. Ever since she had come back, all Jean had tried to do was figure out what to do with her life. She was sure about one thing though, she was done arguing... with Scott, with Logan, with Emma. No. She just wanted some peace for a chance. The fire of youth where everything seemed worth fighting for was dwindling inside of her even if she still looked young from all her deaths and rebirths. All she wanted now was make sure the Phoenix wasn't going to harm anyone else.
Things had changed since she had come back and Jean understood that and had adapted the best she could. If Scott decided that he wanted her back —and he had abandoned his entire family for her before—, then she'd have to see if she could find it in her heart to forgive him and if he chose Emma... well... being a teacher was fulfilling and she was thankful enough to be alive as to feel she had the right to start making demands about happiness. After all, she had killed billions of beings as the Phoenix, she didn't deserve to be alive, least of all happy.
"I guess that everything was simpler with me out of the picture," she concluded, deliberately looking at one of the first evening stars. It was the kind of fear that would consume her on her sleepless nights and just couldn't share with everyone, but he was her friend and one of the closest persons to her at the mansion right now. She could tell him this and was sure he'd understand, even bet there had been times when he had felt the same way in the past. Maybe not the most recent past but still.
"Thank you." She said vehemently when Logan agreed to go with her and smiled a little when he said she was welcome. "I'll make the arrangements while you're off visiting the Avengers," Jean informed. Having something to do would make her feel useful and distract her from thinking too hard.
Were it someone else, she would have offered to help him forget, but Logan's head was the one mind she had ever avoided entering if she could help it. Mostly, out of fear of what she might find in there and how it could affect her. Things remained that way, so she just made a sympathetic face. Jean understood. She, too, had things that would be better forgotten and still she had to live with them.

“So it’ll be Steve then. I’ve known him since the first wars-that was a long time ago now that I think about it. I guess some things you can’t change.” He said with a shrug. The other part of the meaning in his last sentence was towards Tony. He knew he couldn’t’ change the man into something else. He’d just have to tolerate Logan being there for a short time. It was even Tony’s idea for forming the New Avengers and him becoming a part time member-along with his own acceptance of that. So like it or not, Ironman was stuck with him. “It’s a bit an amusing thought now that I think about it. I heard the stories on how the Avengers had been created. And Fury had almost turned down the idea of Stark becoming a leader. He had so many issues at that point he didn’t need the director of SHIELD breathing down his back. Somehow he listens to Fury-probably because he has no choice too.” Logan said as he thought about the personalities clashing with one another. There had been more than one occasion on the New Avengers where he had clashed with the young Spider-Man due to their differences.
It was true, Logan had killed many and even been framed for more deaths than he could count for. Some of them had been that the other person had asked for it. His heart ached so badly so many times when he had been forced to kill Jean. That was one of the reasons why he was a loner before he went with the X-Men. He had killed too many, Weapon X had been a good reason enough to blame for his behavior of striking and killing so many lives. Some of which had deserved it, others not so much. Some he had even forgotten about due to his past. Even on one such occasion, his former wife Itsu-now a piece of his own past there had been many who blamed him for the killing of her. But he couldn’t argue against an entire city or town like that. He had been an outcast; he was surely going to lose if he attempted such an argument. So he just picked up his things and left Japan, his heart broke once more, but it was better than losing more lives. “Yes it’s pretty clear that he isn’t the one for the job. I may dislike it but I am not in the same place as him. If it is the only option, I won’t hesitate.” Logan said.
But as he thought about it, the thought of killing seemed to go against Xavier’s teachings. The X-Men were peace makers so to speak; they weren’t supposed to use violence like the Brotherhood. It was probably one of the reasons why Sabertooth was so inclined on joining the team. He could get away with it. The violence, the killing, the evil nature and no one would care. He was a freak, more than a freak he had been. Logan had come to accept that he was a monster, some of the teachings and the thoughts that Xavier had shown towards him may have been difficult at first. But now he realized he had a place to be. He’d no longer have to travel nor worry about others coming to hunt him down all the time. To use him… As a weapon.
Logan shook his head as he heard Jean say that things would be simpler without her. He had to disagree on that one. Logan missed her heavily and so did Scott-even though thing did get a bit haywire between them at times. “Jean don’t say that. With you gone there was a big hole that most of the X-Men felt. I felt it too.” Logan said but the last part had been a bit of a whisper as he thought about those days. It was clear he had shown some remorse towards Jean when she was gone. He had spent many days by himself alone in the woods that were just out of reach from the mansion.
“Alright if you want too.” Logan said as he looked back at Jean. He still seemed to trust her with the idea of looking into his mind in case something important came up. Over the years Xavier had put in shield barriers and as well as places that were immune for telepathic to try and read his thoughts. Along with having the attempt to avoid with having conflicts of his old and forgotten memories. Some of which he’d probably never get back at this point. E knew that he’d never be able to find everything about his past. But it was best that some telepaths-like the villains didn’t get to see much from what was going on inside Wolverine’s head.

"Guess you're right." She said with her mind set on other situations and people that were impossible to change, either, but only her eyes betrayed that. However, her mind was still following the conversation, despite that half a second long deviation. The tips of her lips curved upward at just how talkative Logan was that afternoon. It wasn't everyday that you got to hear him tell stories, especially old stories and she thought it was nice for a change.
She found it amusing that Logan continued to analyze Stark while he was very similar in a lot of ways. He wasn't one keen to receive orders and his pride wasn't precisely small either. Jean wondered how Fury had managed to keep the delicate balance, but didn't dare to ask. "You're talkative tonight." She observed with a small accomplice smile. She wondered if there was somewhere in particular he wanted to get to and for some reason found it hard to speak about it. Maybe her little comment would encourage him to speak his mind.
Jean wasn't thinking of Logan's killing history when she had made that comment but only about the way he had always done the right thing while she was the Phoenix and there wasn't any other option. She wasn't trying to use him as a weapon, but ask for his support in case things got out of hands. It wasn't like her to remember the worst of people, least of all to throw it on their faces and she was sure Logan hadn't misinterpreted it like that. "Let's hope it doesn't come down to that, though." Jean said both to herself and Logan. Her fist and second option would always be to try to avoid a confrontation. In fact, all she wanted to do was make sure the Phoenix wasn't going to harm anyone, but she needed to be realistic and be prepared for whatever that trip might take them, right?
A heavy sigh escaped her lips as Jean thought that missing someone didn't mean that person didn't make things complicated for them all, but it would be pointless to argue about that when there were more important things to worry about. She bit her lower lip and thought for a moment before replying, her green eyes still on the stars. "I know what you mean and, while it's nice to feel appreciated, sometimes I can't help thinking... never mind. It's still good to be home." She'd rather leave it at that. Self-pity wouldn't do her any good if she was to help whoever was dealing with the Phoenix now.
Jean nodded. "You go do your job and I'll take care of things here. It's the least I can do considering you're risking crossing Stark and the rest to indulge me." She wanted to make sure he knew she was grateful and fully appreciated his sacrifice.

“Yeah.” Logan said as he looked up at the stars that were out now forming above them. Or they had already appeared as the two had been talking. There were so many it was hard to count them all. He could make out a few figures that had been from astrology but that really wasn’t his thing He had other useful ways of bringing himself home like his great sense of smell and as well as his sense of direction. Both of those things he’d use in order to bring himself home. He didn’t need to rely on stars to do it. That’d make him even more old fashioned.
He gave a soft shrug; it was true Logan didn’t speak a whole lot, there had just been a whole lot going on at this point. The Avengers, the Phoenix force, school, Xavier’s supposed death, there was probably more that he couldn’t count on his fingers at this point nor wanted to know about the endless problems that were going on in his world. “Sorry Jean. There’s just been a lot going on.” He said with a soft sigh as he knew that she’d understand that as well. So many things going on could lead to worry, worry lead to stress, and other things would add to that. Even with his healing factor he might somehow badly injure himself and the accident could have been avoided. But Logan still didn’t understand how he and Stark were similar aside from the pride issue. He was a million dollar playboy who loved money and as well as loved media. Logan didn’t care for money, he didn’t want attention most of the time, and the last part was involving the bit of him wanting to be left alone.
“I hope not. Once or twice was enough.” Logan agreed as he spoke with Jean. The memories he wished he had somehow whipped clean from his mind from those days. But obviously that was not going to happen. They were stuck in his mind in all their minds as they were unpleasant ones. He had many unpleasant ones and wished that he could deeply forget them. That was not an easy task, he knew asking Xavier was probably not going to happen. He had to keep his memories and that was as simple as that.
“It is good to have you home Jean.” Logan said as he put his arm up gently on her shoulder. She had done it to him several times and tried to bring back the same careful positioning as she did to him. The last thing he wanted to do was harm Jean for not knowing his own strength with his adamantium skeleton. Logan had always returned back to the Institute and had wondered why. He knew a lot of animals would be able to find their way back to where they were born or an important place that they had only seen one or twice in their lives. He doubted that had something to do with his wanting to come back to the Institute. The atmosphere was something he had always liked, not to mention he had a teaching job here as well. He couldn’t just abandon teaching the students, and for some he saw some progress with them since they first arrived. They were no longer frightened by fighting but actually used his skills since he had been a samurai or even from the wars, so the fighting styles went back a long time ago.
“And if worst comes to worst with Stark, he’ll be too busy to care that I’m around.” Logan added remembering it happened once or twice. It was hard to drag someone like Tony out of the lab when he was on the verge of creating something new. It would be something that he didn’t understand it one bit. “Also Jean it was nice to talk to you again. I know I don’t say it that often but I felt like I should this time.” He added.

She, too contemplated the night sky become slowly full with stars and was lost in deep though for a while. There was so much all this Phoenix business brought back to the fore despite the hard effort to bury those things deep down she had been doing since she had come back.
"It's OK, Logan." Jean assured him. She hadn't been fishing for an apology, just making an observation hoping he'd tell her what was really worrying him "It was nice for a change." A small smile danced on her lips as she looked down at him. "I was worried there might be something else you're worried about... with all that's happened lately." Jean confessed. The few times she had heard him talk about random stuff there had been something else troubling the loner Wolverine.
She sensed the topic had a great potential to put him in a dark mood she was trying to avoid herself. "I'll make my best so it doesn't come down to that." Jean promised, trying to reassure him. It was the best she could do. She knew just how hard it was to know you were harming those you loved, as it had been the case while she was possessed, but to him, it must have been a lot, lot worse, she imagined.
There were so many questions on her mind regarding being back. Like why she was resurrected if the Phoenix force was using some other host or what was left for her back at the school fifteen years later, when most of her friends had either moved out or went on with their lives and she was left behind. In a way, she felt she truly understood Logan now, why he felt so lonely being unable to age the same way others did and having everyone else die or move on while he remained alone. She had her students, yes, and some of her former friends were still happy to have her around, like Logan, Nate or Rachel (?) but it was still a long shot from what her life had been before and adapting to the change was hard, as it included letting go of the things that had been most important to her and try to start over.
It was good to hear that. For someone who often felt alone, it meant a lot. Jean rested a bit of her weight on Logan as he did that, still half lost in thoughts of her past and future. It was good to be home but the situation with Scott and Emma was often tense and she had been wondering for a while if she wouldn't be better off away from her past, the way joining X-Factor had been an escape before. But then she was reminded of the things she still had at the institute, like her students and the few friends, Like Logan, who were still willing to make a place for her in their lives and doubted. However, this Phoenix business was starting to give her a different perspective. While she had resigned to be just a teacher and an occasional X-Man, Jean had started to think of the future and, since she had no kids of her own, of her students. "I've been thinking about taking up a team." She confessed after a long silence that, at least she, didn't find uncomfortable. When Logan wasn't openly trying to make a pass on her, she found his company and even physical contact to be comforting. She seemed to be asking for his approval somehow. She had always been the kind of woman who needed someone's approval before making any important decisions.
A small smile crossed her lips at his mention of Stark. "Good point." And it was one indeed. She knew few people as work-absorbed as Ironman, not that they've been close or anything, but she had heard and seen enough to get a general idea of the man. The last comment came as a bit of a shock to her, but it it passed quickly. She understood what he meant. With all that dark talk bringing back bitter memories, painful for both of them, it was probably something he needed to say considering the fact that he had killed her more than once. Not that she wasn't thankful for that in the end, but... "I missed our talks too." Jean admitted. She remembered that even at her best moments with Scott, she had always enjoyed and valued the time and conversations shared with Logan. "Guess teaching can be a full time job." Which sort of explained why they didn't have much time to talk anymore. That and Jean locking herself in her room during most of her free time to avoid Emma.

Logan shook his head, the things that were currently going on with the Avengers, the Phoenix Force and as well as the X-Men were all currently on his mind. It seemed troubling a he thought about them all at once. It was not going to do any good if he kept worrying and it’d lead to stress, “Nope it’s just those three things that I’ve been worried about.” He explained as he heard Jean speak. He was at least glad that she didn’t mind the talk that they were having. Though it was unintentional, Logan had expected to spend the night by himself, but he invited Jean in without having a second thought on it. He did notice the smile that was appearing on her face, which meant that he had been doing something right if she was happy.
He was glad at least that she would do her best so it wouldn’t come down to killing her once more. Once was enough and he didn’t need a second time to go through it. It would bring back old memories, ones that he wasn’t exactly fond of. And the trauma would begin again for others, not just himself but other members of the X-Men. He wouldn’t want that to happen to the ones that he had been close to and got to know so well in the X-Men. “I’m glad for that. Nothing bad should happen.” He added as he heard her reassuring voice. He could tell that Jean meant her word on it when she was going to try her hardest.
Though the next part surprised him when he heard Jean speak up about forming a small team, there was a possibility about that happening. She’d have to talk to Scott and Xavier about that to make sure everything would be alright. But Logan saw nothing wrong with making another team with Jean. Or the other thought that came to mind was she wanted to be an X-Man again. A full time member was possible. He wasn’t sure if he was going to keep his hopes up on that one, but it didn’t hurt to ask if that was what she meant. “This thought I had when you said you wanted a team. Would you ever consider coming back as a full time member of the X-Men?” A part of him kind of doubted that this was going to be a direct answer like a yes to it. He knew Jean had to take some time to adjust back to her life again and had needed some space as well. But there was always the future, ten year or five years down the road, they’d all still be there, they might age a bit, but the X-Men would still be here and so would the other teams. If Jean was interested in becoming an X-Man once more, that’d be good news on his watch.
“You can always talk to me if you want. I don’t mind at all if you do.” Logan suggested as he offered his part to bring Jean even in closer. He would be there if she needed someone to talk too and Scott wasn’t the man to do the job. He had been busy with his own tasks like running the X-Men while they were all busy. He had an important job that had taken a lot of time away and there were other issues obviously that had surfaced since Jean’s death. Logan had been aware of a lot of them, and lying in front of him wasn’t all too easy. He knew the tricks behind lying on how it altered your heart rate just a little bit and he could detect it. “It is a busy job. I’ve spent more than half a day in the danger room to teach the kids what they have to know.” He said recalling many occasions where things went wrong fast even if it had been a simple mission that he could thought the kids could pull off. Apparently that was not the case in some of them.
