It was weird to be back in England. For a moment, she had considered the word 'home', but her home, if anywhere, was in America, no matter how many good memories she and her father would have made in this place where the sun never came out. They had arrived a few hours ago and spent what little time they had going over the rescue plan a couple of times. Dalton didn't mind working alone, but had been trained to work as part of a team and enjoyed the feeling of union brothers in arms often share. However, used to lead as she was, being appointed to be Nova's guide didn't sound all that exciting. At least, until she read the job description. Then, things started to look up. Dealing with hostage situations had always been one of her personal favorites, especially now that it hit her in a very personal spot. Instead of making her sad or distracted, it fueled her motivation to do her best and that was the mood her partner for this job found her in.
Dalton drove them out of the city, taking secluded roads until they seemed to be literally driving throughout the countryside. The landscape got boring after a while and it seemed totally random when she stopped the car after a long long drive. It was literally the middle of nowhere but, if the information given to her was correct, they'd be just where they needed to. "It's a short walk from here." She informed before getting off the car. It was a random car with a made up plate number, so it wouldn't draw attention, as it could easily pass as a local farmer's ride.
The walk was short indeed and, soon, an old white abbey was visible in the distance. Dalton stopped. "Unless someone really messed up, that's the location." It was hard to believe at first, but then, little things she had learned as a young teen came back to her. "We better not let the appearances fool us. Those old churches can have quite the basements." She said in case her partner didn't have experience with the British countryside... which was most likely.

Sam had to admit just about everywhere he went he noticed how things were different to most places he had visited. SHIELD had sent him on many missions; usually they revolved in the United States. But every once in awhile he was out looking into something like this mission, it was far from home, and far off his territory that he was familiar with. He too had been briefed on the mission by one of the higher up members on the SHIELD team. He read his documents, so he was aware of the task at hand, and was already out on the business. They had been traveling for some time and he felt a bit worn from it, but he knew he had to recover fast before even thinking about trying to take a nap or a long rest. That wasn’t a first priority right now. It was rescuing the man in distress that SHIELD had been after for so long, and they were going to get him for SHIELD.
Sam had to admit that he was curious to see how this mission worked out. He normally worked alone, but there was a mention of another woman, another agent involved that’d be a part of it this mission made things interesting. They’d have to work as a team in order to get to the bottom of this-no pun intended. His eyes fell onto the scenery of the England homeland that they were driving through. If this was his home land they’d only see nothing but desert left and right. That was Arizona was most of the time. It wasn’t long before they headed out of the city, things changed again as the scenery was different. The rolling hills and the fields started to become a bit more uninteresting as Sam turned his attention away from the England country side. Fields as far as the eye could see, it was just like deserts as far as the eyes could see.
Sam looked up seeing their location a bit surprised himself to see how far they had gone to see such a place that they had to go too. He was dressed already in his outfit in order to hide his identity in front of the others. It was his black and gold uniform and as well as his black and red helmet with the four pointed star on the front. “That is where we have to go? I was expecting some high tech security prison.” Nova asked as he looked back at Dalton as if trying to see if there really was a mistake here. This couldn’t be the place, it just couldn’t be. “Orders are orders; we have to go into that place, even if it seems a bit odd.” He said with a soft nod. As he walked after Elizabeth he and the other shield agent arrived at the door. ‘Well here goes nothing.’ He said as he came to the doors. They looked like they were made out of some hard wood. There was no lock from the look of things, so could they just waltz right in? He figured as much as he placed a golden glove on the door to open it for the two of them. There was something that just didn’t feel right about this place.

Dalton had traveled to many different countries as well, but mostly with the Army. Her affiliation to SHILED was relatively recent and this was her first foreign assignment. It was a lucky break that they had been sent to England. Guiding him through the middle east would have been a lot more painful for her, even if that drove her to work harder. It always took a toll. The frustrating part about this mission was the lack of information. Dalton would have preferred something less vague than a set of coordinates and indications when it came to location or what they'd encounter at their destination. It must have been a really last minute assignment for them to be getting vague indications. Maybe there was something bigger, more important sucking all the intelligence resources rather than rescuing one boring scientist.
She was alert most of the trip, running on the adrenaline of finally being let out to play, so to speak, but also because it had been a long time since she had been in England and didn't want to miss a thing, even if the place wasn't home. There were enough good memories there to make it worth it. In fact, some of those memories came in handy when it came down to business. Her father and her had liked camping and had often used abandoned abbeys as refuges while he was training her survival skills. She knew those old churches could be tricky, even old school ones that hadn't been turned into... whatever this place might be now. The building seemed old and abandoned, with tall grass growing and parts of the walls and ceiling missing, but there was something off. It all seemed to be deliberately abandoned, with no weeds among the overgrown grass and no moss in the old stone walls. Dalton made a face.
"You can still get your wish granted. This place seems... off." She and the other agents made their way to the door, her eyes looking upwards, searching the old crevices for hidden cameras. If there were any, she didn't see them, but Dalton thought that they probably wouldn't have the element of surprise. The fact that she carried her gun ready to fire had nothing to do with that fact. She shrugged. "If you wanted a secluded place to hide, this one's perfect." The woman pointed out.
Dalton's eyes met her partner's for a moment to warn him before she took a step 'inside', though half the roof was missing and there were several rotting rafters above the huge nave. Everything inside seemed as unnatural and out of place as the exterior, with rotten wooden seats and kneelers. Some were broken, as if something big had trashed through them, but it seemed to have been many years ago. The place seemed harmless but her instincts were yelling at her that something was wrong from minute one. That was why she had chosen to go first. Her partner was the valuable mutant and she was the disposable human. At least, the way she saw it.
Her free hand took a throwing star out of one of her vest's pockets and threw it across the room, dropping to the floor the following instant. Immediately, a set of traps went off and hidden machine guns shot across the hall in front of her. A half smile appeared in her face. So much for an old church, she thought. Well, at least they were in the right place and there were only two door frames in the huge nave. One of them probably led to the old cells and the other to the kitchen and the stairs to the cellar or catacombs, if it had any. "Welcome to the old world." She ironized.

Nova felt reassuring at that point when Dalton mentioned that he’d get what he asked for. This task seemed so simple before he had opened those doors. Just grab the guy and get out, right? It seemed simple enough. Well that seemed to be wrong so far. After looking over the area that they were in now it seemed like this area had much more that met the eyes. Sure it was a church, but there just was a bad feeling about this place, and it seemed that Elizabeth agreed with that. There was something here that rang out bad news on them. With that they had to stay on their guard for what ever happened next. “It seems to be that way.” Sam agreed as he stepped in after Dalton. She seemed hesitant at first just as he had that uneasy feeling when he opened the old wooden doors. “It is pretty secluded, and a bit dimly lit. Luckily I could fix that if it gets too dark. My powers are kind of bright.” Sam said seeing that the only way that light was coming in was from the glass stained windows. He couldn’t make out what they had said on them or what they had portrayed. But it was obvious that it was some sort of religious manner.
As for lighting the room, that was a different story; his powers emitted a blue glow from what he had observed at a young age. The Nova Force had come in handy in many ways, like he was a floating flash light that gave of a blue glow. He wasn’t going to be surprised if someone gave him a nickname off of that in order to show how bright he glowed. But on the bright side there was at least the part where he didn’t have to worry about bringing a flash light. There were some other convenient things that went on with the Nova Force; he’d use them obviously if it came to the last resort type of move in fighting.
He continued to look around the room as his attention was brought to the front where it looked like there was an area where the top part would have been where the preacher stood in order to speak and give ceremonies. The area was cracked in so many places that it looked like it was going to fall apart. The structure had weakened so badly that touching it would probably make it fall apart. “Well what we’re looking for is an entrance, one that is hidden in plain sight to most people. They’d never expect it to be there.” Nova said as he continued to look around, finally deciding to levitate with his powers to get a bit of a higher look. His body seemed to glow a faint blue as his powers kicked in, it was one of the only ways you could tell that. Here it’d be one of those moments where you’d ask one of those question, ‘now if I were a hidden door, where would I be located in a church?’
“You can say that again. It’s like we stepped back in time.” Nova agreed as she spoke about this being the old world. Nothing had changed for about a thousand or so years from the look of things. People came and went, but the place still stood. As he continued to look around he felt his back hit something as he jumped from the sound and his arms glowed blue like he was ready to fire back at it. With a pause he realized what he was about to fire at as he held back the photon blast. It had just been a large statue of someone important. “That was my bad. This statue seemed to come out of nowhere and startled me. Either that or it was just a bad call for me.” Nova apologized making his own mistake. But he couldn’t help but look at the statue for some reason wondering if it was hiding something from them. Was this statue holding a secret or had he just come across it by a random moment? "Heay Dalton, I don't mean to sound even weirder. I'm not the jumpy type or well a psychic, but this statue is just giving off a strange feeling for me." Nova said as he tried to explain what was going on.

The light problem had been considered for Dalton, who wondered if the underground would be lit or even darker... if there was a basement to begin with, but she was oh-so-sure. She and her father had been to that kind of old ruins before and despite them being actually abandoned, they had always had some kind of cellar at the very least. Besides, what was the use of putting security in an old decaying church if there was nothing to guard or hide? Her eyebrows raised at Nova's information. She had read about him for this mission, but reading a file often gives you a general feeling rather than a particular idea of every little case where the described powers could be used. She had counted on him knowing how and when to make the most of them without her having to think of it. After all, there was a good reason he worked mainly solo, she was sure. "Good to know." She replied not daring to raise her voice too much. A part of Dalton wondered if night googles wouldn't be a better alternative for being sneaky, but if they breached the place's security already, there was surely people ready to attack them the minute they set foot in a more important area.
After triggering that trap, Dalton took a chance to examine the floor. It seemed too new when you took a closer look between the high grass blades that grew even inside the half destroyed nave. She gritted her teeth and stood to look around too, taking a closer look at the walls in the places where the firing had taken place. One of her hands ran across the stone walls. The holes for the machine guns had been very precisely carved and fit them snugly, so it was an automatic response after all. Well, in that case, she could cross that area without getting shot... The walls were so thick they could have very well hidden a person behind the guns. Just to make sure, she ducked below the fire line as she crossed the nave towards the altar and the area Nova was checking himself.
She paid attention to the door frames in the sides, the wooden panels fallen, broken and half rotten on the floor. There, it was more evident that the original stones had been replaced. "Did you take a look at the floor?" Dalton asked kneeling for a moment to press her ear against it, listening intently for... anything really. An annoyed face gave away the negative result of her probing. That's where having powers, any kind of powers, became useful. She walked through the door carefully but nothing happened. It seemed like she had stepped in the part of the old building that lead to the cells and living quarters of the Priest or whoever had inhabited that place at its prime. The floor was original in this area and quite dusty too. For a moment, Dalton wondered if that wouldn't be the best place to look, but then she decided she was being overly paranoid and let it go. Nothing had attacked her there. Probably just a false alarm.
When she came back frustrated, her eyes zeroed on Nova, her own assault rifle ready to attack whatever had made her partner glow like that. Then, she heard him say that. Well, his comment was kind of weird, but so was that place, so Dalton looked around for the statue, nodding at his apology. "That's all right. I'm no mutant, for that case." She replied. Then something seemed to catch her attention. Looking around, she noticed a tall and thick column behind her as she was standing between it and the statue.
"Don't want to scare you either, but I don't think I've seen it when I was here before." Now her eyes didn't leave the statue of some kind of saint or whatever. It was hard to tell, weathered as the stone was and with the nose missing. On one hand there was a big column there, but on the other hand the angle was wrong for it to have hidden it from them as they entered the place. Dalton touched several of the better preserved parts of the statue trying to feel for a switch or whatever, but it just seemed stupid after a while and she quit. That place was so frustrating.

"No. I guess there isn't any luck with that one." Nova said as he shook his head and watched Dalton as she tried to listen in. It was true, it'd probably be useful if one of them had a power to try and enhance their hearing. They'd need someone like Wolverine for that. But he knew that Logan wasn't the type to do missions for SHIELD. He had been with the X-Men for years now so it wasn't likely that he'd join in again on this team. But if they had more help than just the two of them, they might have made more progress. But orders are orders, right?
“Don’t shoot at me. The glowing is a part of my powers. I can’t help that part of it.” Nova said as he put up his gloved hands as he saw that his ally had come in already frustrated. He was frightened by the statue as he nearly knocked it over by bumping into it. Then she came in with her gun loaded ready to fire on him. Well that was not going to end well if one of the SHIELD agents wound up dead by accident. He could just imagine that Fury was going to get mad at them for that. A punishment was no doubt in their midst for that mistake he made, and he realized it. “It looks like you hadn’t found anything either…So far this mission has gone sour fast.” Nova said as he changed subject seeing Dalton’s face.
Aside from the sudden bad meet, Nova had noticed that she looked rather disappointed. It looked like she hadn’t found anything either that would have helped show that there was something out of the ordinary in this building. It was just a church. If it was just a church, SHIELD would have normally left it alone; they would have come if it was of high importance. And they were just missing something about this place and it seemed that they hadn’t figured it out yet. He looked back at Dalton as she still had her weapon out and eventually she’d lower it to his assurances that he was alright and there was nothing wrong. It had been a mess up entirely on his fault. “I ran into the statue and it startled me when I hit it. It made this rather strange clanking sound.” Nova said as he saw that Dalton was watching the statue with her own eyes. From what he could make out of it, the figure looked faded and so worn down he could not figure out if it was a saint or had once been an angel. There were so many battered parts on it; it might not have been worth trying to figure out what or who it had once been. But he did realize something, if the statue moved when he touched it, there was something else behind this statue. That meant it wasn’t glued do the ground and it could be moved.
"I haven't seen this statue either until just now. It looks like it belonged to a saint. But there are dozens of saints in some religions. So it's not helpful." Sam said wishing he knew more than just the briefing that SHIELD had given them. That’s when the idea came in to Nova as he thought about it. Well it didn’t hurt to try to move it. For all he knew there might be nothing underneath it. On the flip side, there’d be a booby trap going off before the two could flee the church. It made him think twice about it as he weighed his options on moving the statue. He already moved it once, and nothing happened. He had hopes so far that it was more on the first idea that he had wanted. Well there was only one way to find out. “I’m going to try to move the statue. It wasn’t grounded, and it can’t hurt. Just be ready if something bad happens.” Nova said as he began to bend down as he started to pick it up by the base of the feet where he saw once again on how chipped and old it was. As he started to lift it he realized it weighted a decent amount. The statue probably was about 40 or 50 pounds from the feeling of it.
After he began to lift it up and he moved it towards the left of where it had once stood and placed it down. “There. Is there anything interesting under the statue that we should know about?” He asked as he looked back at Dalton hoping she was watching or at least paying some attention to what had gone on. This was one step forward towards figuring out this large puzzle that was for them. They’d have to figure this out and put their two minds together if they wanted to get through it alive and out without any problems. Sam had been on SHIELD for about 10 years now, and Dalton had her own fair share of missions that she had been on. But there was one thing that wouldn’t just help them, experience alone would not get them far.

"Well, the original floor has been replaced in the nave, where the grass and rotten wood cover it." She informed regarding the floor as if they didn't just have a small misunderstanding regarding what she had meant with his question and what he had answered.
"I know. Don't worry, Sir. I always do my homework." Dalton informed seriously when he asked not to be shot. She didn't know all the uses and purposes his powers could be used to, but had read the summary of what he could do as she was sure Nova had been handed her file as well, so he would know what to expect from his partner.
She nodded and let out some sort of irritated growl. How could have someone turned that ancient place into a fortress they couldn't penetrate? No, she wasn't happy, but his change of topic distracted Dalton. "We're still in one piece. That's still OK in my book." The woman tried to sound less serious than she felt. Dalton didn't have her gun towards Nova, just had it out and ready in case something else moved out there.
During her inspection, Dalton had realized something else about the statue. "This is just wrong." She confirmed regarding the 'saint'. "This is clearly not a statue of Jesus." Even weathered as it was, that much was clear and she was the one who knew the area and its ways. Over ninety percent of the times those came with a cross the statue didn't have. It was rare to find one where he was without the cross. "And, like you said, there are too many saints, yet this is the only statue in the whole place." With that on mind, she took a step back and started to look at it from a different angle. Of course, there was also starting to shoot randomly and let them come and get them but if they hadn't already and someone had been through all that trouble to make the place seem deserted, she doubted violence would draw anyone out.
"Roger that." Dalton took cover behind the empty stone door frame and was ready to act if something went out of control. "Ready when you are." She saw the statue lift and slowly go back to where it had been, revealing a square stone that was as new as the other ones she had told Nova about, but it seemed so tightly fit, she doubted the tip of her hand knife could even come between it and the next stone, which was irregularly shaped and not nearly as big.
"There seems to be a trapdoor here, but I seriously doubt we can open it. Must be sealed off from the inside." She reported, her face sober. "Got an idea thought. People down there have to breathe. If you can't lift or break this huge tile we could find the air vents out there and flush the rats out with pepper gas or something." She had a few choices when it came to gas grenades.
Before she could add anything else, the rock started to make a noise as it rose and half a dozen men in black army-like suits came out of the hatch shooting their m16 all around. "Get down!" Dalton had shouted the moment her mind had recognized the shape of a human head and started shooting from her covered position.

“Ok I understand.” Sam said with a soft nod as he took notice of the floor. It seemed to be aged just like the rest of the place that was here. One time it looked like it had once been a beautiful church. But now he hardly saw any beauty in it, the church was in disrepair and those repairs would take a long time. Maybe one of those days someone might come in an attempt to restore it once to its former glory. He seemed more relieved now that she wasn’t going to shoot him. It was something that they managed to avoid and it was good that he had said something about it.
“You’re right about that one. I imagine SHIELD would be very fond of the idea that we did come home in a mess.” Sam agreed as he listened to Dalton. It was still clear that she had been frustrated on how the events were turning out. He didn’t blame her for feeling that way. They didn’t have much to go by on except for the old church. They had gone on some searching to see if they could find anything and all they found so far was the statue that had scared him half to death by accidently stepping into it. Well he had a decent reason why he had been startled by it; the statue looked like a towering…creature or human standing right above them. That very well might have been a threat towards them if the creature was going to attack. Thank goodness it was not one. He agreed with what Dalton said, it was the only statue in the entire one; he figured there would have been more of some symbolic items that were here. There was something such as a cross or other statues of important figures. But no thee was just this one. How bizarre was this church starting to turn out now when they realized this idea. “You’ve got a point. It’s very odd. I don’t see anything like angels or other saints in this area.” Sam added.
Once Sam had removed the statue it seemed to make more sense now. So it seemed like the statue was guarding something, or at least hiding something from plane sight. There was a trapped door in their midst and he knew if he tried to pull on the openings it probably wouldn’t budge. Sam heard Dalton speak about how they could possibly get in. An idea of using the air vents was very good. But it was cut short as the door swung open and a bunch of goons came out ready to strike at them. Each one had a gun loaded and ready to fire. This was one of those “Oh crud.” Moments in life, and nobody liked those.
Without even thinking twice he moved down to take cover behind the preacher’s marble stone that was cracking from the force. It was like hiding behind a car window or behind a rock wall to stay out of their range of fire. Plus the only other thing that he could think of was along the part of the pews. Each one of them was lined with wood. But was it a very good idea to hide behind those? It’d sound more like something along the lines of a shoot out in one of those old wild west movies. Well without the horses and the desert like areas. That was missing in it.
“I don’t exactly have a gun but I can still hold these guys off for awhile. They’re just like a swarm of bees.” Nova said remembering what happened if the bees were ever disturbed from the hive. Some would strike in order to protect their ‘queen’ well in this case it was going to be their boss who they were trying to protect and all their precious items that were down stairs. And as well as holding the very thing that they had come for. It was the scientist that they were supposed to take back to SHIELD.

She was sure that, whoever went through all the trouble to replace the original floor, wasn't up to any good. After all, a good restoration would have meant only a versed person would have been able to tell the difference. They were that thorough in England. No. This was a sloppy job, something meant to keep curious passer-bys from discovering too much. For some reason, Dalton felt like Nova hadn't quite understood what she meant, but the eerie atmosphere the church gave off made her feel like being as quiet as possible. She wasn't a big talker in the field either, so she didn't explain herself any further.
Dalton was snapped out of her train of thought by the trap door opening and the chaos that followed. Her first round of shooting had managed to take down two of the six or seven goons that had come out of the floor. The rest was spreading through the nave, using the stone columns, fallen walls and the very statue as cover, while shooting back at the two of them. Dalton had taken cover behind the old doorless stone frame right after she was done shooting and stopped to reload, her breath coming out fast.
"Guessing that's why you've been a signed their best marksman as partner." She replied over the noise. When she was done reloading, Dalton took a quick peak and saw one of the men going through the other door to use it as protection, just like she was and shot him in the head. He hadn't been looking her way, too concerned looking at Nova to notice the human hidden. That had been his end. "Just try to draw them out in the open."
While she was retreating inside the priest's chamber again, Dalton saw a second wave of attackers came out of the trapdoor. Dalton repressed a sigh and thought that maybe leaving one of them alive to torture for answers on what they were to expect down there would be a smart move. Not exactly the most pious of actions, but she was the kind of person who got the job done. No remorse.

"I suppose you're right with that one." Nova agreed as he heard Dalton speak up about being a marksman. That of course didn't mean that he was completely useless. After all SHIELD had trained him from a young teenager. He had no where to go and no one to help him when he was just starting out as a hero. Now ten plus years later had made a huge difference for the hero as he was clearly a promise and an important member in the team. It also meant that Sam didn't make mistakes, at least he wasn't known to make many since his days of just starting out and having the 'grunt' status. SHIELD saw him as being valuable and he wanted it to stay that way. As one of the gunmen go too close to where his hiding spot was he was on edge, using his right arm he fired a blast of photon rays at the oncoming enemy as he flew back against one of the columns and he was out cold. "That's an idea. I'll get the ones that come too close as well." Sam added as he continued to watch the men as they came forward. It was like they were coming down slowly as their numbers dwindled. Of course he knew this was only the beginning, there were plenty more down stairs he was sure of it.
There'd be members guarding the scientists that they were supposed to be rescuing. Guards even before that time. The idea of it wasn't bothering Sam that much he knew he could trust this woman with her ability and she had to trust him with his. Not that he had much choice, but going in alone on this was probably a bad idea. A very bad idea from the looks of the mess that they had gotten into.
But he couldn't stop, Dalton was doing a lot of the work and he had to do his fill as well. He couldn't hide or act like bait like the rest of the night. But jumping into this battle was probably going to be the worst idea that he had ever made. He was going to get killed if that were the case, and SHIELD would not be happy. So he continued on from where his hiding spot was as Nova helped Dalton fend off with the remaining gunmen. They seemed to come in waves, he just hoped that they'd stop soon. Nova knew that they couldn't keep this up for ever and the duo had to press on.
This was only stage two of their plan that SHIELD had given them before they left. One more grunt came forward that had gotten too close, but Sam could not see the fear in the man's eyes so it was clear that had not been on his mind. The grunt was ready to open fire, and he shot him first again. "Some how we have to figure out how to get inside. We can't keep this up forever." Sam said loud enough so Elizabeth could hear him through the gunfire.

"Good." She yelled over the commotion. It was more or less what she was doing after all. Killing all the wanderers and those who tried to come too close to her, though most had figured out that was a bad idea from second one. She might have been using an automatic, but her aiming was very good.
At the word 'idea', one appeared into Dalton's mind and for a while she ceased fire, pretending to be hurt. It was a bold move, but the position she fell into still offered some protection to her head, which was the most important. If she was lucky and had been given good enough gear, the vest would protect her chest if she was shot.
Most of the men that had been busy firing back at her stopped when they thought her down and then, a few others ceased fire as well, getting up to walk closer to Dalton to get a closer look and see if she was dead indeed.
The woman spied on the goons through her long lashes, which were one of the few advantages of being a woman, and then threw a throwing star to the same area where the first one had lodged. The silver thing stuck near the first one and the machine guns hidden inside the stone walls were activated once more, taking down most of the remaining infantry. She looked up at Nova for a second with a wild, proud grin.
There were still a couple of them, but at least the pair wasn't severely outnumbered anymore and there didn't seem to be any more people coming out of the hatch for the time being. She trusted Nova could take care of the remaining goons that were mostly near him and thus, had survived her little stunt with the throwing stars.

Sam had noticed that the firing had stopped as the hero turned back to see what was going on. What was wrong? They had been doing just fine for awhile and she stopped? However Sam looked at her for some time before figuring out what she meant. She had been pretending or faking an injury, he wasn’t that stupid, and not even close to the way that these goons were. He had thoughts that the gunmen they had been fighting so far weren’t exactly the smartest of the bunch. They were just the beginning, the grunts, the replaceable weaponry; you didn’t need much thinking here. He got a glance back at the ones who were firing back at him and Dalton; to his surprise they too had stopped firing. Now all that was left was silence, the two groups were waiting to see which one would fire back; Nova hadn’t even attempted to blast one of them with their photons. He wasn’t about to make a mistake since Dalton looked like she was up to something. And it wasn’t long before his hunch was right. She had been up to something as a sharp object was hurdled out of the air and straight towards some of the gunmen. He saw it at the last minute from where he had been resting, something bright and shiny. He had seen her with throwing stars earlier; he had come to the conclusion now that Dalton had used those. They were the ones who had made the mistake, not the two SHIELD agents, thank heavens for that. Their numbers started to go down more and more as Sam saw this as an advantage.
His body lit up once more as his photon blasts were use again, he shot several blasts towards the remaining men, and he probably could count on his fingers how many that were left. It wasn’t long before the floor was covered in bodies of the gunmen. Many of which he had assumed were dead at his point. Blood had covered the floor of the men’s blood, and as well as the ones that Nova had knocked out earlier with his own powers. Well that ordeal was over with now that he thought about it. But they were just beginning. “Now that was something. Too bad we can’t stop now, we have to keep going.” Nova said as he finally stepped away from the hiding spot that he had taken cover from the bullets.
He knew next time he might not be so lucky. He was also aware that he couldn’t celebrate just yet on a victory. To SHIELD a victory was coming back with what they wanted and coming back alive without much of an injury or even a scratch on them. “And the coast looks clear.” He added seeing that no one else was coming out of the trap door that they had opened. Apparently it had set off some sort of alarm but it seemed that the alarm had been turned off after the amount of men tried to deal with the problem. He knew there would be many more traps when they descended down into the maze of rooms underneath the church.

She stayed completely still for as long as her stunt took to work, almost not breathing at all to make a convincing acting. Then, she had taken care of part of the infantry and saw Nova do the same to his share of the goons. They weren't as sharp and attuned as she had been with other people she'd worked together for years, but the team seemed to be working out decently so far and Dalton felt content with that.
Dalton admired the way Nova lit up and used his powers with a pang of envy but did her best to cover him, switching between checking on the people he was fighting and the entrance, but no new enemies came out of it, which actually made her feel uneasy rather than relieved. There was surely better trained troops or smartly devised booby traps waiting for them down the hatch. "For now." Dalton agreed, eyeing the hatch with suspicion. "This was probably just the infantry." She said aloud what they had both thought.
"If my experience with old churches is anything to go by, it's gonna be a maze down there. If they're keeping this man here, he's gonna be at the lower levels and it can be two to three levels of catacombs unless they've decided to dig deeper than the original tunnels..." She looked up at Nova to make sure he was in the same page. While she talked, Dalton had been reloading her gun and making sure the others hanging from her utility belt were ready to be used too.
"Ready when you are, but I bet they're saving the best for last." She commented with a half smile that wasn't humorous.
Downstairs, there was one level of what looked like more or less normal catacombs, full of niches and old bones, and the place got more and more modern and technological the deeper they went into the earth, but Dalton was still put, waiting for Nova. If they had any talk or planning to do, that was the moment.

The very same emotion of envy had been there when Sam had witnessed his own powers from his father. The helmet had channeled the very energy through his father and then when Sam inherited the helmet, the powers were then his. Sam soon understood how powerful his father was and how often he was needed. The Nova Force was a gift and there was great responsibility that came with it. As they finished the job of this first part they started to descend the long and old stair case their vision and light started to fade around them. They had walls on them would leave anyone claustrophobic as it felt like they were being closed in around them.
“I wouldn’t be surprised. They probably have tougher soldiers than the ones that we faced. They were just the disposable ones that they don’t care about losing.” Sam said as he listened to what Elizabeth had to say. “And yes I’m ready.” He added as he gave Elizabeth one last assuring look before heading down the stairs. He tried to count how many there were as they went. There were probably twenty or more, it was a long descend as the staircase felt like it was getting steeper. It was one way he could tell that they were going deep underground. Probably to areas that were so secret that they hadn’t been seen by other humans in years. So as they entered it seemed like they had to travel through a maze, Elizabeth was probably the better one at the guide here and he was the one to follow after her.
He knew they’d spend probably at most a couple hours trying to navigate their way through the tunnels. It was not going to be fun, but it would be well worth it in the end. SHIELD would probably give them more than a pat on the back in order to say a job well done. Maybe a promotion was in order? Or there was the other thought of possibly given another task as they were just brushed aside. It could end up either way depending on how the mission went. But the first option they had to shoot for. Get in. Get out. Grab the scientist with little worries right?
The light started to fade as the light of several candles lit the hallways. Their shadows were right beside them as they walked along. It felt very old fashioned down here. If those went out, Nova could use his light from the powers he had received to light the way. He was like a lantern or a flash light for that matter. “I still don’t understand how anyone would have liked it down here. It’s dark, cramped, and unhealthy living conditions. Not to mention someone could get lost down here. These tunnels seem endless. It might as well be someone’s tomb down here if they were to die down here.” Nova said. There were many traps that were laid out for intruders, which are exactly what they were. But once they found the scientists they’d have to get out of there without hesitation.

The difference was that he eventually inherited his father's powers and she was bound to be forever human.
As they descended into the darker tunnels and the air became colder and more humid, Dalton took out her night vision glasses and put them in a more accessible pocket, where they could be easily reached. Without any enhanced senses, she would need all the help she could use and, still, tried to pay special attention at everything her limited senses brought back.
"If we're lucky." She said rather cynically. "They could also have more machines or robots, ones much better designed we can't easily evade or disarm." A twisted smile of disgust curled up her lips at the idea of having to disarm that kind of device. Her ex husband was the demolition expert of the group and she was just the heavy hitter, but there was no place in the soldier's mind to listen to the pang of pain inside of her heart. "At least that's what I'd do. It's cheaper than hiring people and doesn't die on you."
Once more, Dalton knelt and put her ear to the floor, listening intently. The floor was solid here too, so this wasn't the last of the original catacombs. That much had been almost obvious, but she didn't want to make a stupid mistake by not checking the obvious first. She had seen many good soldiers lose their lives for rushing things when no one was openly attacking them. "There's at least one more level of original catacombs below." She informed in a whisper, not wanting to attract unnecessary attention towards them.
One of Dalton's eyebrows shot up at the sight of the first few candles. "Whoa, someone has a like for dramatics." She thought out loud. "One would think they'd at least remodel to include electricity here, right?" Something was SO off about that place and it only got worse every second. Candles... why would they need... she as thinking when the stone under one of her feet gave in a few millimeters. The following moment, flamethrowers inside the stone walls got ignited by the candles right in front of them, creating an impenetrable inferno in front of them.
Dalton rose a hand to her eyes, blinded by the sudden change in lighting and, after the seconds it took her eyes to get used to the light, realized she couldn't see the path ahead. The only thing visible in that tunnel was a blazing fire that danced in front of them, as if each flamethrower were being moved up and down. There were at least a dozen of them in every side of the corridor, as far as she could see and they seemed to be at least a foot apart from each other. The place was a maze, but if that path was so stubbornly blocked, she guessed it was the right one. "Awesome." Dalton protested.
The place was becoming too hot too quick and the stone walls got hot and kept the heat, distributing it like in a primitive stone oven.
