Sam has at least two characters that I am aware of that are alive and important in his life. His first one is his mother, there isn't much history on her that I'm aware of (So you get to be creative here!). But I know she married his father and he was born first into the world. He has one other sister that was always interested in their father's stories of him being the Nova before Sam obtained his helmet. One of his sister's favorite stories involves him going around Saturn and supposedly creating one of the rings. Sam had doubts at first, but after experiencing the helmet's power at first hand, he understood why his father was so important on why he had to leave. Sam's father's whereabouts are currently unknown at the given time. He has been assumed dead since Sam has become the Black Nova Force's successor after his father. He has had many regrets now that he has not had a father figure by his side and telling him how to be the next Nova. That's where SHIELD came in as they taught him how to be a hero that he is today. He has been an agent with them for over 10 years. He still keeps in touch with his family back in Arizona. Of course they are the only ones so far besides SHIELD who knows of Nova's real identity, and on occasions his sister and his mother come to visit him to see how he's doing.
