((OOC: yes, I realize this is the RPing equivalent of 'playing with yourself' in the most literal way possible, but sometimes I enjoy to have my characters interact among them to kill the time while waiting for other people to reply. It's an exercise, but if the mods think it's wrong, I'll just stop it before I go blind LOL))
Jean had recently woken up after her last death. This time, she had missed a considerably long period compared to her previous deaths, and she had too many questions and no answers. They ranged from the complex issues such as "why was she being brought back without the power of the Phoenix if not to be possessed? Was she being given a second chance at a normal life?", to the simplest personal matters like what she should do with her life now that she had a choice... but none of the options she had always considered as the only ones possible were available for her anymore. That left her with a hollow feeling of loneliness and the though that it might have been better for everyone at the mansion if she had stayed dead for a change.
She had been rescued, dressed and given a room at the mansion, where Jean was currently trying to put herself together and organize her mind... and her life, while poking at her lunch with a fork rather absent-mindedly. Scott was with Emma now. She had encourage them to be together, had told him to live. It would be completely hypocritical of her to take it back, to claim that it was all said in a highly emotional moment, when she thought she would never return, but she wouldn't do that. Even if she did feel that way and wanted so badly to have back what they had had before Scott's affair with Emma, because it was a very human feeling to have, she wouldn't give in to that. She had to be stronger than that. After all, if Jean thought about it from a logical angle, she would never be able to take Scott back despite her conflicting feelings for him. Not after what he had done.
So, what she actually wanted was to go back to a time where things were perfect between them and he had never sort of cheated on her with anyone and that was impossible, Jean told herself. Therefore, there was no way she could be back together with Scott, even if a huge part of her wanted to do anything to return to his side. Where did that leave her? Logan had been the third wheel for so long and she had always tried her best to make him feel loved at least as a friend. Now she was the third wheel and wasn't sure she'd be strong enough to live with everything that title came with. A deep sigh was interrupted by a knock at her door.
Jean flinched as she realized who it was and felt her stomach tighten at the idea of having a conversation with Emma, which was bound to happen sooner or later, but she would have expected it to be a lot later than her first few days back in there. "Come in, Emma. It's open." She said in a strained, tired voice. Thinking so much about gloomy things had left her mentally and emotionally exhausted and the idea of dealing with her in that moment didn't appeal the redhead.

Emma had had almost fifteen years of peace to slowly gain terrain in Scott's mind and heart and it had really been a painfully slow work considering she was competing against his dead wife who was also his first love and all that mushy nonsense that irritated her
It had been nice, having Scott to herself and finally earning her own place among the other X-Men along with their respect and for a while she felt content and almost comfortable living at the mansion. Then Jean had reappeared out of nowhere one day and Emma feared her perfect world she had spent so many years building would shatter to smithereens as Miss Perfect reappeared in the picture to make her look like the bad guy. Fortunately for her, most of the X-Men had moved on with their lives and didn't seem especially thrilled by Jean's return, even if she could feel they were happy.
Still, she was a Frost and leaving unfinished business wasn't something she did. If that woman was back they most definitely had to have a talk, the sooner the better. Things had changed, she had made sure they had and would do anything to let her clear that she was the past and Emma was the present, that she might live there again, but Scott was hers now and she wouldn't let that idealistic weakling ruin all the great work she had done with his life, bringing back old bad habits and turning Scott into a repressed person again just because he'd do about anything to avoid her looking at him with disappointment. Ugh, just thinking about that made her feel sick. No. She had to make sure Jean knew what her place at the mansion was now a days and that she wouldn't interfere with her relationship with Scott.
With all that in her mind and a lot of poorly repressed anger in her heart, Emma knocked on Jean's door the very day she arrived, barely giving the other woman time to settle herself. Emma didn't want her getting too comfortable, she thought as she entered the room, which lacked all the glamour and interior design hers had.
"You came back without the Phoenix force. Any light you'd like to shred on that matter?" Emma decided not to go straight to business for once.

Despite being tired after her long trip back to the mansion, it took Jean less than a second to go from mentally exhausted to irritated when Emma spoke to her like that. Her usually friendly expression became hard and annoyed. Couldn't she at least give her a couple of days to settle in before storming into her room in an attempt to mark her territory?
Jean turned around to face Emma, but didn't bother getting up from the chair she was occupying. She didn't need those cheap tricks like standing up to appear more powerful. They both had their minds for that kind of power game. "I've just woken up a few days ago as confused as everyone else as to how or why I'm alive." She said curtly. "But you've no interest in that. You came to talk about Scott." Jean stated in a tone that was unfriendly enough as to result misleading. She wasn't planning on stealing her ex from Emma, but that didn't mean she had forgiven the other woman what she had done.

A part of Emma felt relieved at the idea of going straight to business. "Yes." She admitted cautiously, like a lioness trying to decide whether or not to strike. "He's moved on and is happy with me." Emma said defiantly. "He's finally taking a healthier approach towards his job and life in general, and I won't let you turn him into a workaholic, repressed boy scout again." Her voice had taken the tone of a warning.

An ironic smile appeared in Jean's face at the confirmation of her theory. That wasn't an expression she usually wore, but that woman brought out the worst of her.
A part of Jean felt a pang of pain when she heard those words, but the logical part of herself thought that it was all she had ever wanted for him: to be happy. The fact that it couldn't be with her stung, but she didn't want to get back together after all that had happened. She hadn't seen him yet, but fifteen years was a lot of time and she wondered how he looked now. Had he become visibly older? It was stupid to entertain those thoughts at such a time, but her mind was acting randomly, not wanting to focus on the painful stuff.
"Poor Emma. You're so afraid you won't be enough for Scott anymore you had to come down and tell me to stay away from him." Maybe the White Queen had been right when she had said that her kind demeanor hid a playground bully. It wasn't like she enjoyed to make people suffer, but they certainly had a score to settle, a score that would never be completely settled and having the upper hand at those verbal or mental tug-o-wars did feel good.
"Lucky for you, I'm not here for Scott but, if I were..." The pause there was deliberate. "...let's say one tour of your hall of failure was boring enough for several lifetimes, but I could make an effort and take it again if you insisted." Jean said not willing to let Emma forget who had won the last time they had had an argument.
"Truth remains I moved back to the mansion because like it or not this is my home and the X-Men are my family. Now, if you insist on playing the annoying cousin who likes to disturb family get-togethers at a lack of something better to do, go ahead. Give it a go and see how the other X-Men like it." Jean tried to sound as detached as she could, but it was clear that she was irritated to say the least. "Personally, I think lowering yourself like that is sad."

"Don't fool yourself, Jean. I'm only looking after his best interests like you should have." The blond replied coldly. That ought to sting, she thought pleased with herself.
Emma mentally gritted her teeth, but kept her face a mask of icy fury. She still had nightmares about that sometimes and they left her feeling hollow all day, but there was a really high psychic wall protecting that thought so the other woman wouldn't find it. "And you still think you personally didn't have anything to do with all the horrible things the Phoenix Force did, don't you?" Emma said using all her willpower to appear and sound as calm as possible even if she still came across as angry. At least it was the cool kind of angry, even if she was dying to get more violent. But Emma was no fool and wouldn't start a battle she couldn't win. "Tell me, does lying to yourself help you sleep better at night?" There was a note of triumph in her voice.
"Really? And how would you call refusing to move out of the house you grew up in by the time you are... how old should you be turning this year, again? Fifty two?" Emma made sure to add a few years to hit every woman's soft spot.

Indeed, the comment hurt, but Jean tried to focus on what was important. She knew there was no point in obsessing about the past and forced her own mind to let it go for the time being. "Always the charitable one." She ironized.
"I don't know. Does it?" Jean retorted, her mental self also gritting her teeth. How dared Emma say she had taken part of that genocide willingly?
"Oh, come on, Emma. We both know you're just upset I still look thirty at forty one... even though you're not bad for your age." Jean said with a half smile. Then she stood up, her salad forgotten on her desk as it was clear that Jean's appetite was ruined.
"If that's all you wanted to say, you can go now. I've got things to do." Jean dismissed rather calmly. Saying that last phrase about her age had felt so good, she almost wasn't upset by having seen Emma... almost.

"You don't have to believe me." Emma said with a shrug and a poker face. She wasn't forcing anyone to believe anything and she truly believed Scott was better with her than he had been with Jean. Otherwise, nothing would have been able to tear their marriage apart, but if Scott had been receptive, it meant that things weren't OK between them.
"I'm not an idealistic, Jean. I've made peace with my dirty deeds, but can you?" Emma asked, a crooked self-sufficient smile on her face.
"I know the price of that and, believe me, Darling, not even I would pay it." The tone of disgust Emma used was mirrored by her face expression and body language but, deep inside, she really envied Jean's youth.
"Like what? Polishing your nails?" She mocked the redhead and got ready to leave but stopped on her way to the door and turned around. "Don't make the mistake of thinking I'll drop the case. If you go after Scott or become a part of a larger Phoenix Force long-term scheme, you'll have to deal with me."

"Hey hun, everything good at home?" Scott asked, unaware what exactly was going on back at the mansion.
He just bailed on a meeting with Captain America and the Agent formerly known as Hawkeye. Usually whenever a crisis broke out at the Mansion, Emma would fill Scott in on the details/belittle him for not being there. He decided to check in on here to make everything was fine and dandy.
"I'm waiting for my ride to pick me up." He said, filling her in on his status. "Barton made sure someone from SHIELD drove me home, probably to get me home quicker and to make sure I wasn't lying when I told them the mansion was in one piece. Everything good...you're give off some harsh vibes?" he said, noticing that Emma was a little hostile. Which means that a fight had broken out, or she was near Jean, which meant a fight WOULD be breaking out.
"Hey I think I see my ride....it's....a woman on a motorcycle. God Dammit Barton....."

"Sure. Why wouldn't it be." She replied in that tone women use that means something is definitely not good at home and they'll make you hear all about it later, when all you want is some peace and quiet.
"No hurry. It seems we've got ourselves a new cook." Emma said all irony, still using a tone that didn't quite sound all right. She had tried to pick up things from Jean's mind while they were having their little heart to heart and all she could come up with was the fact that the other woman was planning on giving the cooks a couple of free days a week to take care of dinner herself. It was as insane as everything else she did, but Emma was secretly jealous because she was a terrible cook. Last time she had tried to cook for her students she had been barely a kid herself and she had ruined a great classical recipe with ketchup. And she knew Jean had always been a good cook, on top of liking to get her hands dirty and do most of the mansion's cooking herself. "Maybe we could go out for dinner." She suggested. Anything seemed better than having everyone praise Ms.Perfect's cooking during dinner. It was bad enough that she was there. Alive. Did she mention 'there'?
"That's kind of him." She said absent minded, too many things in her head to be paying Scott full attention. At least, until he asked her directly. "It's nothing." She reassured him, still sounding rather upset.
Back at the mansion, Emma's perfect eyebrow raised, apparently out of the blue. "What kind of woman?" She asked, still not pleased. It was enough having Jean back on the mansion, but adding Scott hugging some woman's waist as they sped through the city in the most insecure way of transportation was... oh, Scott will be hearing her rant for a long time that night.

The less Emma said, the more Scott knew something was up. Obviously she was close to Jean, or Kitty was crossing some lines that she shouldn't have had. Or both, it could be one of those days.
"Dalton I think she said her name was." Scott answered. "She's super-green, but that's all I got from her. No worries about her competing with you in the looks department though sweetie."
"And yeah, I have no problem go out for dinner tonight. Just not Asian if that isn't an issue. I know we have several fond memories of Japanese food and our bedroom, but something different would be nice. Hell I'll even settle for Chinese." he joked.
He knew something was up, but you couldn't be direct with Emma when she was like this. You had to ease into it, it would only make things worse. Then again, if this was a Jean thing he didn't want to risk coming home to a cat fight. "So what's bothering you hun? I know you're the telepath, but even I know when your upset without you telling me." he asked.

Now Emma was frowning at the mansion. Was that even a woman's name? It sounded pretty much male to her and she took a peak into Scott's mind to look at the other blond. Well, at least he was telling the truth about something: she was no competence for her and looked a lot like a man with all that muscle. Ugh.
Over the past fifteen years, Scott had learned how to push at least a few of her buttons, as Emma found herself relaxing a bit at the memory of Japanese food and their bedroom. Nicely played, she thought to herself conscious of what he was trying to do. "Whatever you choose." Emma conceded. It was odd of her not to have an opinion about something, but she still seemed to be paying half her attention to him, her thoughts of rage and indignation taking up too much space inside the telepath's mind to be able to cope with both. I just don't think I can stomach whatever the new cook comes up with and, honestly, I'm not in the mood for a family dinner." She sounded irritated and disgusted now. It was clearly one of those tantrums where she didn't get what she wanted in terms of buying the best and had to make-do with some cheap (or even worse, home-made) version of whatever the topic was that time.
So, he wasn't going to let go. What would she tell Scott? 'I made a childish scene in front of your ex' wasn't an option. Her pride would never allow that and blaming it all on fear regarding the Phoenix Force getting out of control when it had been pretty dormant and controlled for the past decade and a half wouldn't be believable. Hmm...
"I had the mansion's gears perfectly greased and running like clockwork for fifteen years. I don't need anyone butting their noses and giving my cooks a couple of days off a week without my permission." Emma now let him see the full force of her anger but not the real cause of it, of course. "There's a reason we're paying someone who's studied for years to get us the best menu money can get." That was the best answer she could come up with. She didn't need to sound convincing, her anger was real and overwhelming, it would make anything believable and, ultimately, it was true. That, too irked her because being dis-authorized, even in front of a bunch of chefs made her feel humiliated and she hated that and Jean for being the one behind it. So it wasn't only about Scott and the Phoenix Force, there was also the fear that she might try to take running the mansion from her. The good part was that her answer was consistent enough for her not to have to get into details about the conversation they've had.

Scott sighed in real life, something that surely confused his driver a bit. "Hun, calm down. You're letting Jean get under your skin again." At this point he know it had to be about Jean, she was trying to defend the help, which meant she didn't want to alert Scott that she and his Ex wear feuding again. "I know she drives you insane, and I know you don't like her undermining you, but I'm sure it's not intentional. Why don't you remove yourself from the scenario and go sit down and unwind? We can go out tonight and discuss more when you don't have an audience."
While he did this, he took out his phone with one hand, and started to text Jean. He was certain there was two sides to this story, but he didn't want it to look like to play favorite yet.
