The year is 2014 and the world has many heroes on its side. Despite most of the original X-Men settling down and having families, they are still active members and have grown in numbers. There's also the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Spiderman and a few unaffiliated heroes. Most recently, the Phoenix attacked.
The power of the Phoenix was harnessed in one woman named Jean Grey. It possessed her and turned her against her friends and fellow mutants. She became an enemy of the world. The heroes enlisted the help of Loki, as Loki knew how to stop the alien being from destroying the world, but that did not come for free. As usual, Loki tricked everyone into believing he was helping the planet. Loki extracted the being from Jean Grey using a mystical crystal, from Jotunheim. Jean Grey survived and was taken as a prisoner of SHIELD, having no memory of the Phoenix, nor of her life before it. It pained the X-Men to watch them take their friend away, but SHIELD believes the woman still poses as a threat if she's able to be possessed by such a powerful entity.
Meanwhile, Loki plans to strike again, in the distant future, once he can give the Phoenix a body powerful enough to withstand her. It will take the cooperation of all of the heroes of the world to prepare for the fight of their lives.
